An Exposition of the ‘Non-Being’ Problem in Atheism

The important question regarding the existence of God is answered in diverse ways by theism and atheism. Theism answers in the affirmative by always concluding to an affirmation of God. Whilst atheism always negates the conclusion concerning the existence of God. By theism affirming the existence of God, theism is affirming the existence of a thing, which is to affirm a being. Atheism must then deny the conclusions of theism, which is to deny the existence of the thing and the being affirmed by theism. Hence for any question concerning the ultimate reason for something to exist, which is termed the ultimate reason of be –

1)         Theism affirms being.

2)         Atheism denies being.

Evidence for what is stated above will be given to clarify the problem.

Example 1.

The Universe exists. What then is the ultimate reason of be of the universe?

Theism Answer (monotheism) – God, who is being, and the universal cause of being, causes the universe to be.

Atheism Answer – God does not exist. God is not being. God is not the universal cause of being. God does not cause the universe to be.

In the above example theism always affirms being and atheism always denies being as indicated by the underlined words.

Example 2.

The Universe exists. What then is the ultimate reason of be of the universe?

Theism Answer (pantheism) – God, is the universe. The universe causes its own existence (being).

Atheism Answer – God, is not the universe. The universe does not cause its own existence (being).

In the above example theism always affirms being and atheism always denies being as indicated by the underlined words.

Example 3.

The Universe exists. What then is the ultimate reason of be of the universe?

Theism Answer – being.

Atheism Answer – not being.

The third example reduces the prior two examples down to the simple form of being and non-being to clarify the problem. In the above three cases, theism affirms being as the cause of being, and atheism must deny theism and thereby conclude that being is not caused by being. Atheism then must conclude that the ultimate reason of be for the universe is always non-being.

The question - What then is the ultimate reason of be of the universe? may be changed to focus upon any specific thing, as follows. What then is the ultimate reason of be of any thing that exists? Again, theism will always conclude to being and atheism will always conclude to not being. Consequently, implied in atheism’s conclusion is– any thing that exists, does so ultimately caused by nothing (non-being). As the conclusion of atheism is absurd, for non-being is not a cause, atheism is problematic.

Therefore atheism has an unresolvable, problem concerning the problem of non-being. Because the problem of non-being in atheism is absurd, the problem cannot be resolved within atheism. Therefore atheism is always false.
